3D Mammography Now Being Offered at Roxborough Memorial Hospital

Philadelphia, PA – Roxborough Memorial Hospital is now offering a new screening and diagnostic tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer—digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography.

The breakthrough technology uses three-dimensional imaging to provide a clearer, more precise view, compared to traditional digital mammography that takes two-dimensional pictures. It allows radiologists to see through layers of tissue to better examine areas of concern.

“Roxborough Memorial Hospital is committed to the fight against breast cancer,” said Leslie Finnegan RT R CT, Director of Radiology at Roxborough Memorial Hospital. “In offering low dose 3D mammography exams, we can provide the latest and most effective imaging tool for breast cancer screening.”

Statistics from the American Center Society indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If breast cancer is detected early, a patient’s five-year survival rate is 90 percent.

“We want to make sure that we are providing the timely and expedient care that our community depends on,” said Finnegan.

The latest FDA-approved Imaging, which is being used at Roxborough Memorial Hospital, also affords patients the benefits of 3D technology without additional radiation exposure. It provides exceptionally sharp images using an advanced ergonomic design and superior screening platform.

“With this latest technology in breast imaging, coupled with our highly trained staff, we are providing the most advanced screening and diagnostic methods and quality care to our community,” said Dr. Patrick J. Lenahen, Chief Medical Officer at Roxborough Memorial Hospital.

Studies conducted on 3D mammography have demonstrated an increase in overall breast cancer detection over 2D imaging, particularly for invasive cancers.

“The new 3D mammography will help us see masses and precancerous cells more clearly, which dramatically reduces the likelihood of false positives and callbacks,” said Lenahen.

The new mammography technology is part of an organizational effort to meet the needs of the community and part of a concerted effort to strengthen Women’s Services at Roxborough Memorial Hospital.

“Making a healthy difference in the lives of women in Philadelphia County is at the forefront of our mission,” Roxborough Memorial CEO Matt Shelak said. “Providing the best care we can to ensure the health of our mothers, sisters and daughters is vital to our hospital and our community.”
