Roxborough Memorial Hospital To Go Tobacco Free On July 4th

Roxborough Memorial Hospital today announced that the hospital is going tobacco-free as of July 4, 2013. As of that date, no tobacco use of any kind will be permitted inside or outside of the hospital and on any hospital property. This includes all grounds, parking lots and the School of Nursing. This initiative also will include the elimination of the designated smoking area outside the Wolcoff Auditorium.

The hospital is joining many other Philadelphia area hospitals in an effort to become tobacco-free. Says Peter Adamo, Chief Executive Officer, "As a health care organization, Roxborough Memorial Hospital is committed to the health and safety of our patients and our neighbors. We have a responsibility to take a leadership role on this major health issue. We have a further responsibility to treat the whole patient, both mentally and physically. Allowing patients to use tobacco products while in our care defeats this purpose."

According to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Philadelphians have suffered the effects of unhealthy environments. In 2010, 25.2% of adults were smokers, representing the highest smoking prevalence among the 10 largest cities in the United States. Among Philadelphia high school students, 9.5% smoked at least once in the past 30 days. Fifteen percent of children live in a home in which an adult smokes indoors. In 2009, smoking led to over $700 million in productivity losses in the city and 2,381 deaths. Since 2000, approximately 30,000 Philadelphians have died of diseases caused by tobacco use and secondhand smoke.

Partnering with the hospital on this initiative is Get Healthy Philly, a public health initiative focused on tobacco control, healthy eating, and active living. Get Healthy Philly will be working with the hospital to facilitate seminars for the staff and community and distribute cessation-relation products.

Roxborough Memorial Hospital is a 141 bed acute care community hospital accredited by Joint Commission. Founded in 1890, the Hospital has a long tradition of providing exceptional care for the patients in Northwest Philadelphia including the Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls, and surrounding communities.
