For the second consecutive year, Roxborough Memorial Hospital is participating in the Donate Life Hospital Challenge, sponsored by the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) and Gift of Life, the organ procurement organization for Southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Beginning in April, which is National Donate Life Month, and continuing through August of this year, the hospital will participate in a wide variety of events for both hospital staff and community members to increase awareness about organ, tissue and corneal transplantation, to promote organ donor registration, and to identify opportunities for life-saving organ donation.
As a result of the hospital’s efforts in 2015, the community gained greater awareness of the importance of organ donation and the scope of the need. In the region served by Gift of Life, over 5,700 individuals (including many infants and children) are awaiting life-saving organ transplantation. These are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and children of people in our community. Nationally, the number is over 120,000. Every day, approximately 21 people die while awaiting transplant. An organ donor may save up to eight of those lives. Through organ, tissue, and corneal transplantation, up to 50 lives can be improved by one donor.
Roxborough Hospital was awarded Platinum Status, the highest level attainable in the HAP campaign, for its participation in 2015. This year, a full program of hospital and community activities will once again be offered, and members of the community are encouraged to get involved. Look for us at community events and let us know if your organization would like to set up an educational program or donor drive (email the Donate Life Steering Committee chair, Dr. Sally Lane, at firstname.lastname@example.org). Above all, registration as an organ donor is a simple but critical step. You can register at the time of your driver’s license renewal, or go to
www.donor1.org for a link to the Department of Transportation website to register. For more information about organ, tissue and corneal transplantation, contact Gift of Life at 1-800-DONORS-1 (1-800-355-6771).
