Roxborough Memorial Hospital Opens New PCU

Roxborough Memorial Hospital today announced the opening of its new Progressive Care Unit (PCU).  The new PCU is the latest investment the Hospital is making; it follows the October 2010 opening of the new Medical Psychiatric Unit, the first such unit in Eastern Pennsylvania, and the recently renovated Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit.

The PCU is a hospital unit that specializes in treating critical medical and surgical patients needing specialized care and observation. Patients on this unit are treated for a variety of cardiac and pulmonary problems and include patients with new pacemakers and defibrillators, myocardial infractions, and stroke.  The nursing staff has received advanced training in the care of these critically ill patients and in the use of sophisticated equipment and technology located in the unit.

Says Dr. Michael Deangelis of Cardiology Consultants of Philadelphia, "The new PCU provides patients with a higher level of specialized care until they are able to move to a medical-surgical room. Each room will be telemetry equipped to monitor patients' progress. The spaciousness of the new unit improves physician access to the patient and permits the nursing staff to keep a closer watch on patients."

The new PCU consists of 8200 square feet, a 41% increase over the floor space of its predecessor.  The unit will care for up to 19 patients.  The spaciousness of the new unit optimizes clinical excellence while enhancing the patient experience offering greater comfort and privacy. Each room is linked to a computerized system creating electronic medical records that capture and archive all patient vital signs, laboratory results, clinical histories, medication orders, radiology reports, digital images, and clinical assessment information.  Wireless computers allow physicians and nurses to securely access any information about the patient at the bedside.

Natalie Glantz, Chief Nursing Officer, notes that the new PCU is configured for greater efficiencies. "The design of the unit enhances patient safety and promotes patient satisfaction.  The staff in the hospital is very excited about the makeover of the unit."

Roxborough Memorial Hospital is a 141 bed acute care community hospital accredited by Joint Commission.  Founded in 1890, the Hospital has a long tradition of providing exceptional care for the patients in Northwest Philadelphia including the Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls, and surrounding communities.

Realistic disaster drill provides valuable training at Roxborough Memorial
Roxborough Memorial Hospital participated in a citywide disaster drill on April 22, 2009 with the assistance of students from the Green Woods Charter School and Roxborough High School who served as volunteer patients. A realistic scenario indicated that while visiting the Independence Hall area on a field trip, the students were exposed to potentially deadly sarin gas during a terrorist attack.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "sarin is a human-made chemical warfare agent classified as a nerve agent.  Following release of sarin into the air, people can be exposed through skin contact or eye contact. They can also be exposed by breathing air that contains sarin."

In the situation described in the drill, the students would have been brought to Roxborough Memorial after beginning to experience a number of symptoms of unknown origin while on the bus transporting them back to school.

After being contacted at 1:00 p.m. by the City of Philadelphia's Department of Emergency Management that the drill was underway, hospital personnel began to quickly respond based on their ongoing training for such an event.  The decontamination team, who would be the first in contact with the "patients", began to gown in appropriate protective gear and masks in order to protect themselves from exposure. Other employees began to install the decontamination tent in the parking lot outside of the Emergency Room. Inside the hospital, doctors, nurses and ancillary personnel began to assume their designated locations and responsibilities as specified in the hospital's disaster plan.

When the school bus arrived, each student was escorted through the tent individually to be decontaminated. In a real event each patient would have been washed down thoroughly in the tent, but that was only simulated in the practice drill.

After being decontaminated, the patients walked or were transported in wheel chairs or on stretchers into the hospital. Patient Access department staff quickly obtained necessary information before the patients were taken into the Emergency Room for evaluation, treatment and transfer to hospital units as appropriate.

"These drills are an important part of the hospital's training for disasters," said Gerard McShea, Director of Public Safety. "They are welcomed by administration, physicians, nurses and ancillary staffs as a valuable learning experience. Each one helps us to better understand our duties, responsibilities and areas for improvement. We critique each event, make the necessary changes and update our disaster plan to be as ready as possible for a real event."
