Nearly all Roxborough Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Graduates Complete Program with Employment Commitments

Philadelphia, PA-- Roxborough Memorial Hospital's School of Nursing graduated 51 nursing students, the largest graduating class in the school's 107-year history, on Thursday, May 26, 2005. According to Joanne Serembus, Ed.D, R.N., CCRN, Director of Nursing Education, "Most of the class of 2005 already have employment commitments in hospitals and other healthcare facilities directly upon graduation." Twelve of the graduates are scheduled to begin their professional careers as nurses at Roxborough Memorial.

"Nursing is not only an attractive field from a financial standpoint, it offers the opportunity to help others in a very personal way that is not available in too many other work environments," commented Patricia T. Nelson, Ed.D., R.N., Vice President of Education "In fact, seventeen of our current graduates came to our School of Nursing in search of a second career after working previously in such diverse areas as human resources, real estate and personal training. Sixteen members of the class hold college degrees in other disciplines, including accounting, business administration and criminal justice. Each of these graduates brings a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to the healthcare field."

The Roxborough Memorial School of Nursing's 21-month hospital-based program provides students with a unique blend of nursing theory and clinical experience. In fact, former preschool teacher Eileen Ryan of Havertown, PA, the senior class president, commented, "We were challenged each and every day to go beyond the classroom and apply our knowledge in the hospital setting. This program gave me a true balance of lecture and clinical experience."

Ryan plans to join the medical-surgical unit at Roxborough Memorial.

Philadelphia resident Tarik Khan, a college theater major and former member of the Screen Actor's Guild Union who once performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, said, "I came to the School of Nursing looking for a meaningful career change and chose Roxborough because of its solid history and strong reputation. Now that I'm graduating, I'm prepared to take my National Council Licensure Examination and begin practicing as a registered nurse."

The graduation ceremony took place at St. Philip Neri Church in Lafayette Hill, PA. Natalie Glantz, B.S.N., M.S., Roxborough Memorial's newly appointed Chief Nursing Officer, delivered the keynote address to graduates.
