Roxborough Memorial Hospital's new MR Unit offers vastly improved patient space, and much less acoustic noise

(Philadelphia, PA - December 8, 2008) - Roxborough Memorial Hospital has acquired the latest in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology by installing the new Vantage Titan Unit from Toshiba America Medical Systems.

As the only one currently operating in Philadelphia, and one of only two in the entire five county area, the 1.5T Vantage Titan's new open-bore is 18 percent larger than most other existing 1.5T systems. That larger open space allows for shoulder-to-shoulder imaging, and its ultra-short magnet length of 1.4 meters is expected to provide a better imaging experience for all patients. In addition, Toshiba's patented Pianissimo® technology offers a significantly quieter MRI experience that should be immediately noticeable to patients, particularly those who may have experienced uncomfortably noisy MRI tests in the past.

Dr. William R. Reinus, Roxborough Memorial's director of Radiology, praised the technological advancements that make the Vantage Titan so unique. "By offering the largest and widest bore available with a significant reduction in noise, it is a dramatic improvement over traditional open-bore 1.5T MR systems," he said.

"The larger bore provides much more space for patients inside the machine, and the reduction of acoustic noise is significant because that is the most common cause of patient discomfort during an MRI exam," Dr. Reinus added. "These features should help to create a better imaging experience for our patients, especially those with claustrophobia. We are also excited because this MRI machine will increase the range and comfort of patients that can be imaged at our hospital, including individuals weighing up to 440 pounds."

MRI is a non-invasive testing procedure that uses a powerful magnetic field to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. It provides a powerful diagnostic tool to supplement other imaging methods such as x-ray, ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) scanning.

"With the addition of the Titan, and the previous installation of our new CT scanner, we believe that we now have a true state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging facility with all services conveniently located within our Radiology department for the first time," said John J. Donnelly, Jr., the hospital's chief executive officer. "This accessibility will be a tremendous benefit and convenience for our patients, as well as the doctors and employees who care for them."
